1) The Impact of Federalism on Inter-polis Competition: a Journey through the Peloponnese

The main focus of the PhD project will be the investigation of the impact of federalisation processes and federal policies on inter-polis competition in ancient Greece. Leagues with federal features which do not take the form of koiná will also be examined. The same is true for conflicts between political communities beyond the level of the polis. Particular attention will be given to conflict-management strategies, power-balancing dynamics and cross-border activities. They will be assessed in relation to federalisation processes; for this purpose, conflicts between political communities which are located in regions organised in a federal form (1), conflicts between political communities that are part of non-federal supra-state bodies with some federal features (2), and conflicts between political communities which are not members of any organisation above the level of the polis (3) will be analysed. The spatial field of investigation will be the Peloponnese. The doctoral candidate is expected to collaborate closely with the ERC project team "FeBo: Federalism and Border Management in Greek Antiquity" (ERC 2021 COG PR. Nr. 101043954).
